This bird identification challenge is all about knowing which birds can be found in your area and its surroundings. Species knowledge often leads onward to an interest in, and care for, nature. If we know the name of the species in our area, we can easily learn the names of even more. We may want to understand their life cycle, the ecosystems that affect them and their place in the natural world. This knowledge is the foundation of our understanding of how nature connects and how we can take care of it.
Challenge
This challenge is based on learning which birds can be found in your area and its surroundings and listening to birdsong. Try to find three birds that are singing, or calling. Identify the species of the singing, or calling, birds. Among the usual species which are heard early in the spring are Great Tits, Chaffinches, Blackbirds, Greenfinches, Blue Tits, Wrens, Robins and more. Closer to the summer you may hear Nightingales, Redstarts and Cuckoos. You should find three birds that are singing, or calling, and try to identify which species they are.
Go for a walk in your local area and listen out for birds. Choose one call at a time and try to see the bird and to take a photograph of it. In total you should find and identify three species of bird. You can use binoculars, books, and the internet to help you. The links below are to Swedish sites, but you can ask someone to help you find sites in your own language.
Upload three pictures or recordings of the birds’ songs and write in what you think is the name of each of the birds that you found.
